A new report is urging the Chinese government for tighter e-commerce regulations as the world's largest retail economy continues to be flooded with fake goods.

The authenticity and quality of products sold online in China came under scrutiny again as the latest government report showed complaints over online orders have leapt 357 percent in the past year.

Over 40 percent of online goods are fake

Only 59 percent of goods sold online were genuine or of good quality, according to Xinhua News, and the report urged the Chinese government for tighter e-commerce regulations.

Earlier this year China announced strategic planning was underway to better protect online shoppers, in addition to last year’s regulations that allow customers to return their goods within seven days of purchase and a mandatory registration for online retailers.

The rampant sale of counterfeit and substandard goods online has been a topic of debate this year, with foreign clothing groups and international retailers pushing for new practices that better monitor and restrain the situation.

Alibaba, for example, has been lobbying to keep its marketplaces off a US blacklist for counterfeit goods as pressure mounts.

Online sales account for about 10 percent of China’s total retail sales, increasing 50 percent year-on-year to CNY2.79trn (450 billion US dollars) in 2014.
