Jonathan Simkhai, one of the darlings of New York Fashion Week, will be taking his talents down under to unveil his Resort 2020 collection at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia. Simkhai is set to show his collection on May 13 during the first full day of shows for this year's event. MBFWA is set to take place from May 12 to May 18.

“We are super excited about it,” said Simkhai to WWD. “The collection has this whole element about Magic Hour, when the sun sets and everyone looks their best, and the setting is going to be perfect for that.”

MBFWA has drawn in a slew of top American design talent to show there over the past several years including Oscar de la Renta, Cynthia Rowley, Tome, Garrett Neff and Yuxin Zhang. This year's event will feature an additional 40 Australian brands.

Lukas Vincent, a 2017 Regional Finalist of the International Woolmark Prize, will be showcasing his line, Ex Infinitas. The designer has seen a growing surge of popularity developing a customer base of streetwear clientele.

Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia has turned into a festival of resort collections since 2016 which has helped increase attendance from international press and buyers by 35 and 5 percent.

With the domestic value of the Australian fashion industry at 28.5 billion dollars, designers are rushing to get that slice of the international market share. Sydney has become a growing international fashion capital, expected to become on par with the likes of Seoul and Tokyo. The International Woolmark Prize has also helped nurture up-and-coming design talent there to compete on a larger domestic and global scale.
