Redress Design Award, the world’s largest sustainable fashion design competition, has expanded to include menswear. Applications from menswear designers will be accepted for the first time since the competition’s launch in 2011.

Now in its ninth cycle, the competition aims to find “the next big talent who will inspire a new wave of conscious consumers”, said the Hong Kong-based NGO Redress, which organizes the event. Winners will get the opportunity to create a sustainable collection for retail in collaboration with the JNBY group, one of China’s leading fashion houses. Applications are open until March 14 on Redress’ website. Only fashion students and designers with three less than three years of professional experience are eligible to apply.

“The current fashion system is incredibly wasteful, with only less than 1 percent of material used to produce clothing recycled into new clothing after use”, said the organization in a statement. “With 80 percent of a garment’s environmental impact defined at the design stage, designers have tremendous power to change this”.

Last year, the Redress Design Award received entries from 55 countries, thanks to a partnership with 110 universities worldwide. Further details about the competition and the application process can be found at www.redressdesignaward.com.
